Livejournal’s Russian owners announce new anti-LGBT policy, fandom stages mass exodus

I want this space to primarily host my art and writing, but I had to share this news since it affects me so deeply as a queer artist. As of this Sunday, Livejournal has banned all LGBT content.

I used to wonder why I liked Livejournal so much, but really it was the place where I could most easily protect myself. Livejournal felt comfortably separate from my local acquaintances, including the college suitemate that shrieked in rage at the sight of a RENT poster. Even queer spaces like clubs and parades had anti-gay protesters and people who hurt my friends. Livejournal was this wonderful anonymous garden where you could be your best inner weirdo, with the support of hundreds of other people.

I followed my favorite queer artists onto newer platforms such as Tumblr. People complain about Tumblr being too gentle to special snowflakes, but I think it serves the same purpose that Livejournal did–for a lot of queer people, it’s quite possibly the only community where you aren’t actively hated.

I can only hope that other people in my position can continue to find and create safe spaces in an unwelcoming world.
